Helsinki Airport

Finnish airports and air navigation systems operator Finavia is set to install bag drop machines at Helsinki Airport in summer 2014 and at Oulu Airport in the autumn.

The new self-service machines form part of Finavia’s plan to make air travel easier for passengers and are designed to allow them to drop their own bags to be transported in the cargo hold.

Since 2012, Finavia has been piloting bag drop machines at Helsinki Airport and plans to expand with an initial installation of ten machines at Helsinki and two at Oulu Airport.

Finavia Helsinki Airport director Ville Haapasaari said: "Increasing the number of machines is a global trend in air traffic services.

"Self-service, such as bag drop machines, makes the check-in times of passengers more flexible, evens out the busy periods at the airport, and increases the check-in capacity of terminals.

"More effectively produced airport services also provide airlines with cost advantages, which are also ultimately the pre-condition for moderate flight ticket prices."

Using the machine, passengers can drop their bags themselves to be transported in the cargo hold when the check-in has been done with a check-in machine or online.

Passengers can print out a baggage label with the check-in machine and attach the label to their bag, which can then be scanned at the bag drop machine.

The self-service machine allows a passenger at the airport to move towards the departure gate quickly and smoothly.

The Finnish operator is also planning to deploy the machines at Turku Airport in 2015.
