US state government agency Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission (OAC) has approved $500,000 in funding for the city of Grove to build a new terminal building worth $1m at Grove Municipal Airport.

The grant is part of the commission’s airport capital improvement programme, which is a planning and programming guide that the agency uses to determine how certain airport infrastructure projects are funded.

Under the grant’s terms, the city of Grove will be responsible for providing the remaining half of the investment for construction of the terminal.

Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission director Victor Bird said: "General aviation airports are very important economic engines for communities across our state.

"This is a major project that is going to help the city of Grove economically."

"They provide businesses who own aircraft the ability to reach markets across our state and nation, or those markets unreachable by traditional methods."

The new terminal building, spanning an area of approximately 4,400ft², will feature a manager’s office, a large foyer with vaulted ceilings and a large waiting room along with various amenities desired by business travellers and recreational pilots.

Amenities at the terminal will include an all-day accessible pilot’s lounge, separate men’s and women’s restrooms, break room with fuel sales area, secondary lounge, vending area and two exterior decks, as well as a conference room.

Grove Municipal Airport manager Lisa Jewett said: "This is a major project that is going to help the city of Grove economically.

"We have an industrial park that is right behind our airport, and this project, along with plans to construct a new parallel taxiway and aircraft parking area, will help us attract more businesses to that site.

The construction of the new terminal building will commence immediately.

Currently, the Grove Municipal Airport has a 5,200ft runway capable of handling about any of the available business jets.
