Austria’s Vienna International Airport has reported a 7.8% increase in passenger traffic to 1.93 million passengers in April 2014, compared with the same period last year.
The number of transfer passengers was 9.3% higher year-on-year, primarily due to strikes at the air traffic hubs in Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf at the beginning of the month.

While these strikes partly resulted in flight cancellations in Vienna, they also led to an increase in transfers.
The airport also saw a 7.2% increase in number of local passengers in April, as well as a 1.1% growth in flight movements, a 5.8% rise in maximum take-off weight and 9.1% increase in cargo.
Passenger traffic to western Europe increased 7.2% in April, while eastern Europe recorded a rise of 2.3%.
The number of passengers travelling to the Middle East and the Far East grew by 25.7% and 21.3% respectively.

In the first quarter of 2014, Vienna Airport recorded a marginal growth of 0.3% in the passenger number to 4.42 million, due to the late Easter holidays as well as tense situations in Ukraine, Russia and the Middle East, with travel to western Europe and the Far East increased by 0.9% and 3.1% respectively.
However, the number of flight movements decreased 1.9% to 51,220 and the number of transfer passengers dropped by 5.4% year-on-year as a result of 3.7% decline in passenger traffic to eastern Europe.
