São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) in Brazil has opened a new terminal one month ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2014.
Terminal 3 covers an area of 192,000m², which is larger than the combined area covered by the airport’s other three terminals, and has an annual passenger handling capacity of 12 million.

With the move, the airport’s overall annual handling capacity has increased to approximately 42 million passengers.
The new terminal is part of the airport’s $6bn expansion plan, which is aimed at increasing annual handling capacity to over 60 million passengers by 2022.
Terminal 3 consists of two main blocks of buildings. The first building consists of five floors for arrival and departure operations and the second features 100 spaces for shops, bars, cafés, restaurants, bookshops and general services.
The new terminal was constructed by a consortium, which consists of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Brazilian company Invepar and the national airport authority Infraero. The consortium won the contract for the expansion, maintenance and management of the airport in 2012.

Terminal 3 features new technologies and equipment, as well as two additional aprons that can accommodate 34 aircraft.
