Thailand’s largest airport operator, Airports of Thailand (AoT), is delaying the $1.94bn expansion plan at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport due to a pending review by the military government.
According to a statement released by AoT, it was necessary to delay the development of Suvarnabhumi Airport Phase II pending the results of the country’s audit committee that would monitor government spending.

"The second-phase expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport is among four additional projects to be examined by a committee in charge of overseeing fiscal budget for state enterprises," said the statement.
After coming to power in May, the country’s military rule is scrutinising state enterprises and large projects worth approximately $31.27m to ensure transparency.
AoT planned to complete the construction of north terminal at Concourse A as this area does not have any passenger and service areas. The operator felt that the construction of a terminal building can provide support to both domestic and international passengers.
AoT had estimated that the airport expansion would take nearly four years to reach completion. They claimed that this addition would have helped the airport to serve up to an additional number of 20 million passengers every year.
