Australia will soon introduce a new satellite-based technology to make air travel safer and cleaner at Gold Coast Airport in Queensland.
Deputy prime minister and minister for infrastructure and regional development Warren Truss and federal member for McPherson Karen Andrews made the announcement.

The new required ‘Smart Tracking’ navigation performance system helps aircraft to fly with increased accuracy when compared with conventional navigation means.
Commenting on the new technology, Truss said that the introduction of Smart Tracking by Airservices Australia around the nation was consistent with the government’s commitment to make use of new technology to enhance the safety of aircrafts and improve service delivery.
Airservices Australia has been involved with the introduction of Smart Tracking at airports in places such as Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Cairns, since 2012.
"Aviation is critical to the Australian economy and technology such as Smart Tracking helps further improve the performance of our air traffic management system," said Truss.

By GlobalDataSpeaking about the initiative, Andrews said that it will provide safety, reliability and environmental benefits to the residents of Gold Coast.
"This technology will further enhance the airport’s international and domestic standing and help meet future growth in demand," Andrews said.
"By keeping aircraft flying over the water for longer, Smart Tracking will also minimise flights over homes, leading to reduced noise levels for communities to the north of the airport."
The company has already trialled Smart Tracking at Gold Coast Airport since 2008 within a long-standing flight corridor. Once the technology receives approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, the company will begin its permanent operations at the airport before the end of the year.
