Tampa International Airport (TPA) in Florida, US, will begin work on the first phase of its $2.5bn master plan expansion in December.
The expansion work will be carried out in three phases. While the first phase would involve the decongesting of the airport, the next phases would see further expansions.

The first phase would see an investment of approximately $1bn.
The main terminal of TPA will be expanded to gain 50,319ft², which would provide additional passenger circulation and retail space.
A consolidated rental car centre will be developed to have 1,200 parking spaces. It will be connected to the main terminal by an automated people mover.
The airport will close the ground transportation centres on the east side of the terminal and will move all commercial vehicle operations to enable crews to begin the expansion of the main terminal to the east.
This closure will affect the location of the Economy Parking Garage shuttle, taxis, hotel shuttles, SuperShuttle, cruise ship bus stops and other ground transportation operators.

Work in the first phase will peak in August 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2017.
Construction on the main terminal’s third floor will begin in early January. The project is expected to create and support 9,000 construction-related jobs.
With the completion of the project, the airport expects to increase its passengers handling capacity to 34.7 million by 2041.
