The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US had witnessed record-breaking passenger levels, with close to 43.4 million visitors making the city their final destination.

The announcement was made by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti at LAX’s New Tom Bradley International Terminal, with as many as 70.7 million passengers travelling through the airport in 2014.

The mayor further reported that apart from an increase of 1.2 million visitors over 2013 levels, the airport also received the highest number of international visitors, about 6.5 million. There was a 6% increase in the total number of visitors in comparison with the 2013 figures.

"Angelenos should be proud that our great city is such a desired tourist destination for visitors from across the US and around the world."

Of the 2014 total, an estimated 18.9 million (26.8%) passengers were aboard international flights, which was an increase of 6% over the previous record set in 2013 of 17.8 million international passengers.

Garcetti said: "The continuing, record-breaking growth and strength of tourism in Los Angeles is a shining light for our economy, creating good-paying jobs for our families, benefiting local businesses and generating significant revenue for the city that goes toward the public services our city needs.

"Angelenos should be proud that our great city is such a desired tourist destination for visitors from across the US and around the world."

"These new statistics reflect the success of our efforts. This is not the finish line, but a renewal of our commitment to excel in the competition for global tourism."
