The Gerald R Ford International Airport in Michigan, US, has unveiled the expanded and revamped Concourses A and B terminal, marking the completion of a $12.3m construction project.

The project involved addition of two new airline gates, passenger hold rooms and the MI Tap Room Restaurant, Grand Rapids Magazine travel store and new carpeting, in addition to gate seating in both concourses.

The terminal also got new terrazzo flooring and West Michigan-themed murals.

"I think it’s just going to enhance the customer experience."

According to the airport’s marketing and communications manager Tara Hernandez, the latest expansion and renovation was mainly aimed at accomodating additional flights by Southwest Airlines and US Airways.

"In 2014, we had our best passenger year ever, which means that West Michigan is growing, it means that the businesses are doing well, it also means that people are having fun and they’re living life and going out and travelling," Hernandez told the Woodradio.

"I think it’s just going to enhance the customer experience."

Furthermore, the airport is also planning to kick off construction on consolidated check point by the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016, which is expected to boost passenger experience.

In 2014, the airport handled record 2.3 million passengers, hitting an all-time passenger record, even surpassing the earlier record of 2.27 million passengers set in 2011, bringing the overall passengers flying through the airport since its inception, about 51 years ago, to 65 million.
