"But then we have about six months for the tenants to come in. So the airlines, all the retail concessionaires, the lounge people – they all have to come in. So there’s about six months of work they have to do after we’re finished."

According to the airport, the new terminal will more than double the size of the existing terminal building and add around 22 new aircraft gates for both international and US flights. The expansion would cretae 183,500 m2 of space spread over five levels.

It will also be able to save 4,900 tonnes of CO2 annually with a co-generation power that will generate electricity and heat.

The new terminal will also sport the indoor Compact Transit System (CTS), which will shuttle passengers and their luggage across the entire airport.

Explaining the reason for the delay, Atkinson further said: "We started this design a decade ago – good news, we’ve reacted to some regulatory changes mid-stream. When we open we want it to be the finest terminal in Canada."

The airport is Canada’s third busiest in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movements.
