UK’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports are expecting record number of passengers during the Easter holidays.

While Heathrow said in a statement that it expects to carry around 800,000 travellers, Gatwick also announced that it would expect approximately 480,000 travelling through the airport.

Both airports are expecting to record an increase of 40% and 11% respectively, over last year’s numbers.

Because of the Easter weekend, both airports also announced special features for travellers from 3-6 April.

In a statement, Heathrow said it would arrange for a digital treasure hunt and distribute chocolate Easter eggs for participants. In addition, children under the age of 16 who will be accompanied by their parents will be allowed to travel free on the Heathrow Express.

More staff, including 150 passenger ambassadors, will be deployed at terminals to direct parents to dedicated family lanes in security and free play areas.

Gatwick announced it would be hosting a Mad Hatters Tea Party on 3 April in the South Terminal of the airport where characters from Alice in Wonderland will distribute 750 cupcakes to children and their parents.

British Airways (BA) is also expecting Easter Monday to be its busiest day with 142,000 bookings. New York, Los Angeles and Miami were found to be the most popular long-haul destinations.

Gatwick stated that the top three destinations from their airport were Barcelona, Malaga and Dublin.
