The fourth of the five instruments to be included onboard the national polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite system (NPOESS) preparatory project (NPP) has been integrated by Ball Aerospace.
NPP is a risk-reduction mission for NPOESS that will provide proof of concept for the system, its instruments, and its command, control, communications and ground processing capabilities.

Nasa’s NPOESS is a low-earth orbiting operational weather and climate-monitoring system that will collect and process data about Earth’s weather, atmosphere, oceans, land and near-space environment to enhance disaster planning.
The new visible infrared imager radiometer suite (VIIRS) integrated into the NPP will collect visible and infrared imagery and radiometric data.
Other instruments on the NPP include the advanced technology microwave sounder, the “cloud” and the Earth’s radiant energy system, the ozone mapping and profiler suite (OMPS) and the cross-track infrared sounder.
The NPP science instruments will bridge the gap in climate measurement data between Nasa’s Earth observation system satellites and that provided by NPOESS when it launches in 2013.
