The SES WORLD SKIES SES-1 satellite was successfully placed into geosynchronous orbit on board a Proton Breeze M booster from the Baikonour Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on 24 April 2010.
Built on Orbital’s Star 2.4 platform, the satellite will replace SES’s existing AMC-2 and AMC-4 satellites at the orbital position of 101#176;W.

The new satellite forms a part of the firm’s satellite replacement programme over North America.
SES-1 is a hybrid carrying 24 C-band transponders and 24 Ku-band transponders of 36MHz capacity and with a design life of 15 years, and will provide coverage for the US.
Six of the channels in each band can be cross-strapped to the opposite band, enabling new service capability.
The Proton Breeze M launch vehicle that carried the satellite has been developed and built by Khrunichev Research and Production Space Center of Moscow and marks the 356th launch for Proton.
