The planes are the first 787s to be powered by General Electric GEnx-1B engines, and also increase the total Dreamliner deliveries to seven.

GE Aviation GEnx Program vice president and general manager, Chuck Nugent, said: "The GEnx engine combines advanced technology and material to offer improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and less noise to benefit our operators."

The 787 Dreamliner’s use of lightweight composites and advancements in systems, engines and aerodynamics, will facilitate the airlines with efficient operations and low fuel consumption.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, Jim Albaugh, said: "The 787 will provide the fuel-efficient airplane needed to serve Japan Airlines’ growing international operations."

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane featuring new technologies, capable of flying long-range routes, facilitating airlines to open new, non-stop routes.

Japan Airlines president, Yoshiharu Ueki, said: "JAL will be the first airline to start new routes that have never been flown before by taking full advantage of the efficiencies of this aircraft, starting with Boston service next month and San Diego later this year."

"The 787 with GEnx engines has the performance economics that JAL is looking for to ensure route profitability, and also the enhanced in-flight comfort that our customers will be delighted with," Ueki said.

Boeing has won more than 870 orders for the 787 Dreamliner, with Boeing forced to increase the aircraft’s production rate to 3.5 per month from 2.5 to meet the required raise in demand.

JAL has ordered 45 Dreamliners and options for an additional 20 GEnx-powered 787.

The GEnx engine is based on GE90 architecture and is expected to offer up to 15% fuel efficiency resulting in 15% less CO2 emission.

GE said the company has received orders for 800 firm GEnx-1B engines from 26 customers, which is worth $16bn in list price.
