Perth International Airport in Australia has awarded a contract to Aurecon and AECOM joint venture to design the new runway (03R/21L) and an international apron.

The 2,700m long new runway will be 45m wide, running parallel to the existing main runway and located between Terminal 1 and Abernethy Road.

Nine kilometres of taxiways will integrate the runway with the airfield.

Infrastructure systems such as lighting, navigation aids and an additional fire fighting and rescue station will also be set up at the airport to support the new runway.

The airport board will invest around $45m in the pre-construction activities related to the development of the new runway.

"The new runway represents a significant privately funded investment in infrastructure to support Western Australia."

The pre-construction phase of development includes environmental and other approvals, airspace design and public consultation.

The A$480m third runway project is scheduled to be completed within a decade.

Perth Airport CEO Brad Geatches said that the demand for the airport has proven volatile and difficult to forecast.
For this reason, it is necessary to get infrastructure design and approvals progressed, despite the current softening in demand so that we can invest in future capacity in a timely manner.

"The new runway represents a significant privately funded investment in infrastructure to support Western Australia," he added.

The project is a part of the airport’s master plan 2014.

The master plan 2014, which received approval in January, includes the third runway and the WA State Government’s Forrestfield Airport Rail Link project. It envisages sustainable development of the airport estate.

Perth Airport expects to generate 42,000 jobs and a gross regional product contribution of A$7bn by 2034.
