"The new airport will be the second mega project in the country (next to the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam)."

The airport is proposed to be built in several phases in a span of four to five years. On completion, it will feature four runways and an undisclosed number of passenger terminals.

In November 2014, the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise (EAE) commissioned ADPI, a French consultancy firm, to conduct a study on the mega hub airport development project.

EAE was to finalise the site based on the recommendation of ADPI. Modjo, Teji and Dukem regions under the Addis Ababa province were proposed for the new airport construction.

However, the authorities have not confirmed on the final site.

Ethiopia’s Bole International Airport serviced more than eight million passengers last year, with the passenger traffic expected to increase further by 18% in the coming years.

Currently, EAE is undertaking the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport passenger terminal expansion project worth $250m.
