Sharjah International Airport is the UAE’s third busiest airport and more than 4.5 million departing bags are handled every year at the airport.

The new technology from SITA will enable the airport’s ground handler with baggage reconciliation services and offer complete visibility and tracking capabilities in the airport.

In addition, the exchange of baggage-related information between the airport and airlines will become easier.

Automated baggage management and communication systems, BagManager and BagMessage, will offer timely updates and exchange of information on the loading, reconciling, tracking and tracing of baggage.

"Working together with Sharjah Aviation Services, we are delivering a more efficient baggage service at one of the Middle East’s fastest growing airports."

This will lead to improved operational efficiency and oversight from the moment passengers drop their baggage to when these are collected.

Installation of the systems will be completed in the first quarter of 2016.

Sharjah Aviation Services general manager Mohammed Al Zaghlawan said: "Having significant transfer traffic, automation of our baggage processes and reconciliation became fundamental to our business as it can easily make or break a passenger’s travel experience.

"For this reason, we chose SITA’s baggage technology. It is proven and tested worldwide."

SITA president for Middle East, India, and Africa Hani El-Assaad said: "Working together with Sharjah Aviation Services, we are delivering a more efficient baggage service at one of the Middle East’s fastest growing airports."

Over the last seven years, automated baggage systems have cut the global baggage mishandling rate by 61.3% from its peak of 18.88 bags per thousand passengers in 2007 to 7.3 bags in 2014, which has saved the airport industry $18bn.
