The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation has appointed Honeywell to deploy its SmartPath ground-based augmentation system (GBAS) at Punta Cana International Airport, Dominican Republic.

The latest technology is expected to help increase airport capacity, as well as reduce fuel costs, air traffic congestion and noise, and flight delays.

Honeywell’s SmartPath system is said to be the only US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-certified GBAS that provides an economical and simple digital precision navigation solution.

Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation director general Dr Alejandro Herrera said: "As the most visited tourist destination in the Caribbean, this means we are well-equipped to provide greater assurance against unnecessary travel disruptions due to weather impacts on flights."

The navigation solution enables pilots to make precise, faster landings, therefore reducing costs for aircraft operators and air navigation service providers.

Honeywell Aerospace SmartPath senior manager Pat Reines said: "As the skies of the Dominican Republic get busier and airport traffic rises, Honeywell SmartPath will help pilots land more efficiently and safely.

Honewell’s SmartPath technology can provide aircraft with up to 48 separate landing approaches covering all runway ends.

The GBAS technology is immune to interference from rugged terrain, weather and other aircraft. It increases operational efficiency by enabling aeroplanes to embark on complex or direct landing approaches.
