Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) has inaugurated $350m worth of expansions and improvements at Montréal Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Canada.

The improvements included an extension to the international jetty and the addition of six boarding gates for wide-body aircraft, such as the B-787 and A380.

The expansion also included a new commercial area between existing Gates 52 and 53 and near Gate 1.

"The project is part of a master plan to create a facility that is both functional and vibrant, as well as emblematic of Montréal."

ADM president and CEO James Cherry said: "The project is part of a master plan to create a facility that is both functional and vibrant, as well as emblematic of Montréal.

"It has been completed showing imagination and taking into account our limited financial resources."

An interior open-plan area, including the ‘Nuée de verre’ lighting installation, has also been developed during the 65,620ft² expansion project.

Cherry added: "Although representing a small percentage of the budget, it is these little extras, in conjunction with the open-plan, transparent architectural design, that make all the difference."

Other improvements include an additional 8,611ft² of retail space, free Wi-Fi, shops and restaurants.

ADM used building information modelling (BIM) technology and a construction-management approach to reduce do-overs and extras.

The improvements, which are expected to increase the capacity of the international sector, are planned to continue through 2020.
