Global air transport IT specialist SITA has taken over day-to-day information and communications technology (ICT) operations at Malta International Airport.

The development follows a strategic partnership between the parties to boost the airport’s operational excellence.

SITA will also help the airport to integrate IT in its long-term growth strategy.

Malta International Airport served 4.62 million passengers in 2015.

The number of passengers at the airport is expected to increase by more than 2% this year.

The company has also unveiled an investment programme, which includes a €28m terminal expansion.

Work on Phase I of the project is scheduled to begin later this year.

Earlier this month, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) announced plans to introduce SITA’s self-service check-in kiosks across Bahrain International Airport in 2016.
