Boeing has decided to design its new 777x aircraft, a latest addition to the 777 family, in five US sites and overseas in Moscow, which will move work outside the company’s key facilities in Seattle, Washington.

The current 777 aircraft was being designed and manufactured in Washington.

According to an internal memo by Boeing, the major part of the detailed design work for 777x will be carried out by the engineering teams in Charleston, South Carolina; Huntsville, Alabama; Long Beach, California; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and St Louis, Missouri.

In Moscow, the Boeing Design Center will also be involved in the detailed design activity for the 777x programme.

The memo stated that the company aims at leveraging skills from engineers from across the company’s sites

However, the company did not reveal the details of the amount of the design activity being moved outside Washington.

Boeing spokesman Birtel was quoted by AFP as saying that the spread-out strategy was key to meeting robust demand for commercial aircraft.

"This is the right step to take to add Boeing capability and capacity in engineering as the company scales up to meet unprecedented demand for commercial airplanes and services during the next 20 years," Birtel said.

Boeing aims to launch the 777X family aircraft before the of this year, with Lufthansa being the launch customer.
