Adacel has received a contract from the Kent State University in Ohio, US, to modernise the air traffic control (ATC) simulators deployed at its College of Applied Engineering, Sustainability and Technology.

Under the deal, Adacel will provide the university with the same latest MaxSim ATC simulation software that it supplies to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Adacel will also be responsible for modernising new computer hardware and tower out-the-window visual display systems.

The two existing five-channel, horizontally configured 240° tower views will be removed and be replaced by new eight-channel, vertically configured LED visual displays, helping improve the vertical field of view, as well as increasing the lateral field of view to 270°.

The company will also have to provide system service and support, along with delivering instructor training on the new systems.

Modernisation of Kent State University’s ATC simulators are slated to be completed by the end of this month.

The simulation lab deploys two 270° tower simulators, ten Enroute Radar control positions and ten Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) positions.

The Adacel software will help the simulators to be operated independently or in a fully integrated network that would facilitate interactive training among the various control positions as in the real ATC environment.

Kent State’s ATC programme aims at preparing students to succeed in the FAA Academy and beyond by providing them the highest level of Air Traffic Control education available at a post-secondary institution.

The simulators allow ATC students to have realistic hands-on practice that would help them learn from the basics of phraseology and communications through the advanced skills required to be a competent controller.
