British construction company Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £170m contract from London’s Heathrow Airport to modernise baggage screening and handling systems at the airport.

The project will involve upgrading and installing screening and handling systems at Heathrow’s eastern baggage facility.

The new contract is a part of Heathrow Airport’s three-year delivery integrator framework, awarded to the construction company in 2014, that covers infrastructure upgrade and asset management works.

"This contract award is testament to the strength of the partnership we have developed with Heathrow Airport Limited over the last 17 years."

Balfour Beatty will use building information modelling techniques to manage logistics and interface with real-time airport operations.
