Aerospace engineering services company Windspeed Technologies has filed a patent for a new in-flight design called SkyDeck that will offer seating at the top of the aircraft.

The patent pending SkyDeck can be installed on different aircrafts such as wide-body and smaller executive jets to provide passengers with a single or two-seat platform.

This concept will also allow passengers to access seats via an elevator or staircase. Passengers sitting in a complete transparent bubble on the teardrop-shaped canopy will have a 360° view of the surroundings.

Windspeed said in a statement: "Current in-flight entertainment offerings have not changed much over the decades.

"We wanted to come up with a product that would provide a higher level of entertainment to reduce the boredom of long flights."

Windspeed said that SkyDeck’s canopy will be made of similar high-strength materials as those used in making canopies of supersonic fighter jets.

An anti-condensation film coating will be used on the surface of the canopy to avoid condensation that could cause fogging. The canopies will also come with a UV-protection coating, the company said.

Windspeed is currently in talks with a major aircraft canopy manufacturer, who will design, build, test and supply the canopies.

The new design can be used by airlines to draw additional revenue, as passengers could be charged on a pay-per-view basis.
