An Atlas V 401 rocket from United Launch Alliance (ULA) has launched DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-4 new remote sensing satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, US.

Built by Lockheed Martin, the satellite is expected to capture clear images from approximately 400 miles in space.

The newest in a series of imaging and data satellites, WorldView-4 will use the same technology applied on DigitalGlobe’s other WorldView satellites.

“This morning’s Atlas V launch delivered the WorldView-4 satellite into near sun-synchronous orbit during a flawless flight.”

The mission was once delayed due to wildfires occurred at the launch base, and is ULA’s ninth launch of the year.

ULA noted that the Atlas V 401 configuration vehicle features a 4m diameter payload fairing and is powered by RD AMROSS RD-180 engine.

United Launch Alliance human and commercial services vice-president Gary Wentz said: “This morning’s Atlas V launch delivered the WorldView-4 satellite into near sun-synchronous orbit during a flawless flight.”

Scheduled to orbit Earth every 90min, WorldView-4 will travel 17,000mph and capture 680,000km² of Earth’s surface every day.

In 2014, an Atlas rocket launched DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-3 satellite, the predecessor of the newly launched satellite.

ULA has so far launched 62 CubeSats and is set to launch GOES-R satellite for Nasa on 19 November.
