The PIDS employs a combination of latest technologies, including fibre-optic sensors, video surveillance with analytics, laser walls, and ground-based radar.

These tools work together to provide continuous monitoring and real-time alerts, ensuring the safety and security of airport operations.

MIA has been chosen as the first test site for the TSA’s Airport Security Test Bed programme. With a $6m investment from the TSA, the programme aims to develop next-generation security technologies for U.S. airports.

The PIDS technology is aligned with TSA’s goals to enhance airport safety. It provides precise intrusion monitoring, reducing response times and mitigating potential threats.

MIA’s integration of this system is expected to serve as an example for other airports looking to implement the solution.

TSA Multimodal & Public Area Capabilities director Jim Bamberger said, “TSA always looks at new and innovative technologies to protect the traveling public. The work done here will not only help to secure the Miami Airport perimeter, but the lessons learned will benefit all federalised airports nationwide”.

TSA has funded 50% of the initiative’s costs. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department will cover the remaining expenses for comprehensive coverage along the airport’s fence line.

The full implementation of the PIDS technology is expected to be completed within the next two years.
