East Midlands Airport managing director Andy Cliffe said: “After an in-depth consultation with our airlines and cargo operators, we came to the decision that completing the project in this way was the best way to avoid major disruption in the lead up to Christmas.

"We have every confidence that the scheme will be delivered safely and on time."

“The timing for us is crucial and we had to look to do this in the winter season, when we naturally aren’t as busy.”

The renovation project, which is set to start on 5 November and conclude on 19 December, will see laying of 50,000t of specially formulated material across 150,000m² in total.

The airport will also replace more than 1,200 lights on and around the area with environmentally friendly LED lighting.
