Istanbul New Airport in Turkey has received the ‘Infrastructure – Future Projects’ award at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin, Germany.     

The award was presented to the airport's lead designer Scott Brownrigg, as well as original designers Grimshaw, Nordic and Haptic.

IGA Airports is currently constructing the airport, which it will also operate for 25 years.

Expected to open in early 2018, Istanbul New Airport is situated 35km from the centre of Istanbul along the Black Sea coast.

The airport will initially serve 90 million passengers, but is expected to accommodate 200 million after construction is complete.

More than 300 international projects applied for awards across 32 categories at the World Architectural Festival, held from 16 to 18 November.

Shanghai Airport Caravanserai in China, Jeju International Airport in South Korea, and the main station in Stuttgart, Germany were among the competitors in the ‘Future Projects – Infrastructure’ award category.
