National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has won a contract to provide training to Bulgarian air traffic controllers at its facility near Fareham, UK.
Nine trainee controllers from the Bulgarian Air Traffic Services Authority (BULATSA) will attend a course at NATS’ headquarters for a period of ten months.

These are likely to be followed by another nine trainees on a similar course in 2017.
Under the terms of the contract, NATS will also review BULATSA’s emergency procedures and provide training for the authority’s in-house trainers.
NATS CEO Martin Rolfe said: “BULATSA is a progressive and robust company experiencing an acute growth in demand for its air traffic management services.
“I’m very pleased to confirm we have been appointed to conduct additional basic area training and develop group emergency procedures, especially as we have great expertise in both these areas.

BULATSA currently has the capacity to train ten air traffic controllers every year.
Demand for the group’s services has increased following a 23% annual rise in the number of aircraft flying over Bulgaria, which is said to have been caused by new flight restrictions in Ukrainian airspace.
Once qualified, BULATSA’s NATS-trained air traffic controllers will work at its control centre in Sofia, Bulgaria.
