Edinburgh Airport maps out expansion with £50m investment

The UK's Edinburgh Airport planned to expand its immigration and baggage reclaim facilities with an investment of £50m.

The expansion was expected to triple the capacity for larger long-haul aircraft with the creation of a second immigration hall and baggage reclaim area, which will be built according to the new aircraft stands and air bridges.

The £50m investment was part of the £150m development programme announced by the Board of Edinburgh Airport in 2013.

Chicago's O’Hare International Airport to construct sixth runway for $1.3bn

O'Hare International Airport in Chicago was set to construct a new $1.3bn runway to reduce congestion and avoid delays.

The announcement to build the infrastructure was made by the Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, in the presence of the US Senators of Durbin and Kirk, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and representatives from United and American Airlines.

The scope of the new project included the construction of a sixth runway (Runway 9C/27C) stretching from east to west, as well as additional de-icing pads and taxiways.

Several explosions hit Brussels' Zaventem Airport and subway station

Zaventem Airport in Brussels, Belgium, was struck by two explosions, killing 13 and injuring as many as 35 people.

The two blasts occurred in the airport's departures area shortly after 8:00am local time.

The Belgian state broadcaster reported that the explosions were the result of a suicide attack.

Munich Airport in Germany to launch its new €900m satellite terminal

Germany's Munich Airport was set to unveil a new €900m satellite terminal in a bid to enhance its services for passengers.

Developed by a joint venture (JV) of Munich Airport and Lufthansa, the terminal will feature 27 new gate positions that allow passengers to board flights directly, without bus transportation.

Munich-based architectural firm Koch + Partner provided designs and general plans for the project.

ADM unveils $350m improvements at Montréal Pierre–Elliott Trudeau Airport in Canada

Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) unveiled its new expansion and upgrades made to Montréal Pierre-Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Canada.

The improvements included an extension to the international jetty and the addition of six boarding gates for wide-body aircraft, such as the B-787 and A380.

The expansion also included a new commercial area between existing Gates 52 and 53 and near Gate 1.

LGP begins construction on $4bn redevelopment project at LaGuardia Airport, US

LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP) began construction of the new LaGuardia Airport in New York City, US, marking the execution of the first complete rebuild of an airport in the country in more than 20 years.

The $4bn redevelopment project will see the construction of a 1.3 million ft², 35-gate terminal with a central entry hall and supporting amenities, including a parking garage.

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said: "LaGuardia is a key driver of New York's economy and transportation network, but for far too long it has been outdated, overcrowded, and unworthy of the Empire State."

London Heathrow selects Grimshaw Architects for airport expansion concept design

UK-based architectural firm Grimshaw Architects was selected by London Heathrow Airport as the concept designer for the airport’s £16bn expansion.

The new appointment emphasised that Heathrow Airport is ready to undergo the infrastructure project that would boost the UK economy, and generate new jobs across the country.

Heathrow Airport Design head Barry Weekes said: “We look forward to working with Grimshaw to develop their bold ideas so that once the government approves the Heathrow expansion, we can create a world-class sustainable hub airport which delivers for our passengers, our airlines and also helps to integrate Heathrow with our local communities."

India to open up to 15 airports by 2017

India planned to open between ten and 15 airports by 2017 to boost regional connectivity.

Union Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju  was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying: "The work on regional connectivity is in progress.

"We have developed a scheme for regional connectivity. There are 31 or 32 unconnected airports and we are planning to activate some of them and 10 or 15 airports may be activated by next year."

TAV Airports unveils new GRI G4 compliant sustainability report

TAV Airports released its sustainability report in compliance with Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G4 guidelines.

The newly published report included the results of several activities associated with environment, social and corporate governance.

TAV Airports president and CEO Sani Sener said: “At TAV Airports, we believe that financial returns are not eligible unless they also generate social benefits."

Emirates revamps business class lounge at Dubai International Airport, UAE

UAE-based airline Emirates renovated its business class lounge, situated at Concourse B of Dubai International Airport.

Carried out with an investment of $11m, the two-year revamp was part of the airline’s initiative to upgrade its services for travellers.

Measuring around 10,000ft², the revamped lounge can accommodate more than 1,500 customers, representing a 40% increase in seating capacity.
