Italy’s Leonardo has introduced its new automated system that provides secure air traffic management (ATM) for remotely piloted aircraft in ‘U-Space’, which is located up to 150m above ground.

Effective even beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), the new Leonardo technology will facilitate safe and efficient management of unmanned civil airborne traffic in the low-level urban airspace.

The new automated system is expected to help ensure operational safety and security of remotely-piloted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The use of UAVs is significantly increasing in civil applications, such as infrastructure and environment monitoring, territorial security, as well as remote sensing, search and rescue operations, natural disaster, aerial photography and video recording.

Leonardo’s system works with unmanned cooperative vehicles, which feature self-identification, self-positioning and communication facilities that enable transmission of their positional data and equipment status to the platform.

When deployed in missions, the scalable cloud platform connects with pilots and UAVs through the long-term evolution (LTE) mobile network using machine-to-machine devices.

The system can provide a variety of civil airspace-related service applications, a public register of drones, ground-based safety nets, route and mission planning for low-level urban space unmanned aircraft, and contingency management.

Leonardo has also created a simulation environment that can incorporate remotely-piloted aircraft system (RPAS) operations into ATM scenarios.
