The Libyan Civil Aviation Authority has contracted Enav for the development and establishment of the control tower and technical building of Mitiga International Airport.
Under the terms of the €5m contract, Enav will build new facilities that would be capable of offering all air navigation services and support the full operation and safety of the Libyan airport.

The new control tower, construction of which is expected to be completed by the end of this year, will allow Libya to benefit from the highest level of efficiency and safety of flight operations.
As part of the deal, Enav will temporarily provide the airport with an advanced mobile control tower equipped with latest technology and workstations.
This temporary arrangement will enable air traffic controllers and technical staff to carry out their responsibilities even during the construction of the new facilities.
Under a contract signed in October 2016, Enav is providing training to 60 Libyan air traffic controllers, including the training of operational staff to help them maintain their qualifications in order to operate, after a long period of inactivity caused by the no-fly zone in Libyan airspace.

“The southern zone of the Italian airspace borders on the Libyan airspace, which is currently a no-fly zone.
“Encouraging the development of air transport and flights between Libya and Europe will allow us, in the future, to increase the traffic flows of interest for Italy and increase the revenue from regulated activities, thanks to the reinstatement of the routes that used to cross the Italian airspace before the no-fly zone over Libya was put in place.”
Mitiga Airport currently serves all arriving and departing domestic and international flights in the Libyan territory after the inaccessibility of Tripoli International Airport.
