Greenland Airports CEO Jens Lauridsen said: “This is a truly historic milestone that will create a world of new opportunities for the entire country, as it will, for the first time, enable direct flights across the Atlantic to the nation’s capital.

“This achievement has required a dedicated effort and a lot of hard work from the employees at Greenland Airports and our partners.”

The airport’s opening was marked by the arrival of Air Greenlands’ Airbus A330neo aircraft from Copenhagen.

Air Greenland Group CEO Jacob Nitter Sørensen said: “This connection is far more than a technical necessity; it is the heartbeat of our society, sustaining everything we hold dear.

“Air transport enables fresh fish exports, trade, tourism and investment while supporting education, family reunions, cultural exchange and access to vital healthcare, as well as recruiting and retaining employees through increased mobility.”

The new airport is the first international airport in Greenland’s capital city, allowing larger aircraft to operate and providing direct international flight connections. Previously, international flights were restricted to the remote town of Kangerlussuaq, located further north.

Nuuk International Airport is expected to promote local tourism as Greenland anticipates the number of tourists arriving by air to double from 50,000 to more than 100,000 next year, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Beginning in June 2025, United Airlines will launch a direct service from Newark to Nuuk while SAS and Icelandair Group hf have announced flights from Copenhagen and Iceland’s largest airport, Keflavik, among other locations.

Additionally, two new airports in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq are set to open in 2026.
