SRV is set to start construction on the first phase of the €250m Terminal 2 expansion project at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in Finland.

This follows a contract for works awarded by the state-owned airport operator Finavia to SRV in June last year.

SRV executive vice-president Juha Toimela said: “The Helsinki-Vantaa Terminal 2 extension and modification contract represents an interesting project for us, because it concerns a major international air transport node.

“We have already shown our expertise in the construction of the airport’s railway station, the extension of the P5 parking facility and a maintenance centre.”

SRV said that the site establishment, demolition and foundation construction on a new parking facility will start in December.

The planned extension and modification project is scheduled to be concluded in several stages during 2021-22.

Through the extension and modification project, the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport seeks to create a new area serving flight passengers in front of the present Terminal 2, which is likely to be completed by 2021.

“The Terminal 2 extension is a significant part of Finavia’s over €1bn investment programme.”

The expanded terminal will house a new section for check-in, security checks, baggage transfers, passenger reception, and a travel centre.

Additionally, the existing departure and arrival halls at Terminal 2 will be modified into a gate area. The construction and renovation project encompasses an area of 807,000ft², with the extension accounting for 430,500ft².

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport director Joni Sundelin Joni Sundelin said: “The Terminal 2 extension is a significant part of Finavia’s over €1bn investment programme. It aims to strengthen Helsinki-Vantaa’s competitive position as a major European transit airport and to prepare the airport to serve 30 million passengers in the future.

“The construction project to be launched in January will strongly support our customer experience objectives.”

The project’s development and implementation stage will be based on the alliance model. This will involve project planning and construction being carried out simultaneously, with the risks and benefits shared between the alliance partners.

Alongside SRV, the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport extension work alliance includes Finavia, as well as a planning group that includes architectural firm ALA, HKP and Ramboll Finland.
