United Airlines executive vice-president and chief operations officer Greg Hart said: “As the first and only US-based airline to launch automated screening lanes in multiple airports, United continues its commitment to using the latest technology to meet the changing needs of our customers and improve the airport experience.”

Several features offered by the new lanes have been designed to improve the screening of travellers by automating various functions that were earlier conducted manually.

New additions include stainless steel countertops to enable several passengers to place their items in bins simultaneously; automated conveyor belts; carry-on bags that trigger an alarm warning of a potential threat.

Other features are unique radio frequency identification (RFID) tags attached to each bin to allow for additional accountability of a traveller’s items; and cameras that capture photographic images of the contents of each bin.
