UK’s Stansted Airport served 1.82 million passengers during May, representing a 7.6% increase in passengers, compared with the same month last year.
Air transport movements in the month increased 4.6% year-over-year to 12,832, while cargo tonnage fell 10.2% to 15,374t.
Stansted Airport managing director Andrew Harrison said: "The increased number of passengers using Stansted during May is very encouraging, as it continues the growth trend we’ve experienced at the airport over the last year and reflects the strong confidence of our airline partners as they add more key routes and increase frequency.
"Our £80m terminal transformation project continues to make good progress with the first phase of our retail redevelopment in the departure lounge soon to open.
"We are now entering the peak summer period and expect to be even busier in the coming months as we welcome even more passengers taking advantage of Stansted’s extensive route network."
In the 12 months to the end of May, the airport served 18.29 million passengers, an increase of 3.3% over the previous 12 months.
Air transport movements during this period increased 1.5% year-over-year to 133,908, while cargo tonnage decreased 7% to 203, 468t.
This major investment by Stansted Airport’s new owners MAG is aimed at transforming the terminal by making better use of existing space and providing passengers with new security facilities and an enlarged departure lounge.
The airport’s terminal transformation project was launched in June 2013 and is slated for completion in 2015.
