Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett has announced an investment of $18m will fund improvements in the state’s 35 airports.

Of the total investment, a total of $17.1m is being provided by the US Federal Aviation Administration through the block grant programme, which is funded through taxes collected nationally on airline tickets, freight waybills, international departure fees and the sale of aviation fuel.

"We ensure that they can meet business and community demands and continue supporting these jobs."

The remaining amount is being provided through the aviation development programme by the Pennyslvania Department of Transportation.

The funding is expected to support more than 2,600 jobs.

Governor Corbett said: "Pennsylvania’s public-use airports support more than 300,000 jobs.

"When we expand a runway or make it safer to land at an airport, we ensure that they can meet business and community demands and continue supporting these jobs."
