Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) will use the big data platform of technology firm Altibase after the two companies partnered.

KAC will adopt the big data platform with the aim of harnessing a number of internet of things (IoT) technologies.

Established in 1980, KAC constructs, manages and operates airports and oversees and controls airport traffic. It manages and operates a total of 14 airports across Korea.

Altibase was selected after KAC extensively searched for reliable databases for its big data platform so that it can use new IoT technologies to improve the efficacy of gathering and analysing data, including passenger and airport flow.

KAC said that its legacy DBMSs were unable to fulfil the throughput requirement, which is a minimum of 100,000 transactions per second in storing and manipulating formal data.

Even a few seconds of database downtime can result into fatal casualties, huge loss of revenues and reputation.

As a result, KAC was looking for DBMSs with a high level of stability, which could also be compatible and interoperable with other core systems of Hadoop and the platform.

KAC conducted a number of BMTs and finally selected Altibase over Oracle. Altibase was selected due to its in-memory capabilities, which support high throughput and low latency.

KAC’s zero tolerance of database downtime was also met by Altibase.

With the deployment of Altibase, KAC can collect and analyse big data including flight status and passenger flow in real time, which helps the airport operator to anticipate airport congestion, improve travellers’ convenience and operate airport resources in an efficient manner.

In collaboration with mobile service providers, KAC has also added new passenger services by offering the shortest routes from their departing points to their airports to avoid heavy traffic.

Altibase is currently open source, having been a closed-source database for around 20 years.
