Boeing has purchased mobile and web-based aviation applications developer ForeFlight for an undisclosed amount.

The companies did not disclose the terms of the transaction.

Founded in 2007, ForeFlight has been working with Boeing for the past two years to offer Jeppesen’s aeronautical data and charts on ForeFlight’s mobile platforms.

Jeppesen offers navigational information, operations planning tools, flight planning products and software.

As a result of the acquisition, ForeFlight and Boeing will now integrate their offerings in a bid to provide innovative, expanded digital solutions to all segments of the aviation industry.

“Our companies share a passion for delivering customers the essential tools that drive efficiency, productivity and safety.”

Boeing Digital Solutions and Analytics vice-president Ken Sain said: “We are excited to build on ForeFlight’s tremendous success in personal, business and defence aviation so we can provide next-generation, integrated tools to our aviation customers today.

“This acquisition also expands Boeing’s rapidly growing, unparalleled digital services portfolio, which will enable us to compete and win in the $2.8tn, ten-year services market.”

Boeing stated that the transaction is in line with its growth strategy of ‘complementing organic investments with targeted, strategic investments that position the company for long-term growth’.

ForeFlight co-founder and CEO Tyson Weihs said: “We are inspired by the future built at Boeing and what our teams will be able to create by coming together. Our companies share a passion for delivering customers the essential tools that drive efficiency, productivity and safety.”

Boeing further noted that the transaction will not affect its financial guidance or its commitment to return around 100% of free cash flow to shareholders.

ForeFlight is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and has a workforce of 180 personnel.

The company’s flagship product ForeFlight Mobile assists individual pilots and professional flight crews in gathering weather and destination information efficiently.

The app enables users to route, plan, file, access and manage electronic charts and maps, as well as organise flight publications.
