The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has voted to approve a contract worth $303.3m with ABM Aviation to provide ‘smart parking’ services at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The seven-year parking contract also includes two one-year options.

In addition, the board approved appropriation of $43.3m in capital funds to pay for the required infrastructure upgrades to bring the smart parking services. Some of them are expected to be available next year.

The services include valet and online reservation options at LAX and the FlyAway bus terminal in Van Nuys.

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Justin Erbacci said: “The new smart parking solution coming to LAX and the FlyAway terminal at VNY will transform the airport parking experience, providing our passengers and guests with more convenient, efficient and customised parking services.

“This innovative solution also will enable significant improvements such as streamlined entry and exit, contactless payment, clear wayfinding to open spaces, plentiful electronic vehicle charging, and will offer additional services that our guests have told us they want, such as advance reservations and valet parking.”

The garages in the central terminal area (CTA) at the airport, which were built between the 1960s and 1980s, have not changed significantly.

Recently, several structures were converted to an automated payment system and electric vehicle charging stations were installed in a few of the structures.

The new and improved services that LAWA will offer include guidance / wayfinding signage, automated parking infrastructure, a significantly enhanced user experience, EV parking and valet parking.

Guidance signage will be one of the biggest improvements for indicating the availability of open spaces.

With the smart parking programme, LAX parking garages will have the largest integrated installation of EV chargers among US airports.

The parking contract also includes services at the approximately 4,300-space structure that will open next year at the Intermodal Transportation Facility (ITF)-West.
