Swedish construction company Skanska and New York-based Halmar International have signed a joint venture (JV) deal for a new transport connection hub at New York’s JFK International Airport.

The Swedish-American JV has agreed to construct several roadways and utility upgrades but is focused directly on the new Ground Transportation Center. Skanska said its side of the contract is worth $868m, while Halmar has yet to reveal its potential earnings from the arrangement.

The new Ground Transportation Center will provide nearly 2,000 vehicle parking spaces, with electric vehicle charging points to assist the conversion to EVs. The environment and sustainability are clearly high on the agenda for the project.

An “eco-conscious tinder façade” has been included in the designs, along with a “rainwater harvesting facility… a future green roof and energy-efficient provisions for solar panelling”, according to Skansa.

Work has already commenced on the project, which is expected to complete in December 2027.

The JFK International Airport is already well connected to rail and light rail links to the city and onward transport options.
