Finavia is refurbishing Runway 15-33, also known as Runway 2, at Helsinki Airport in Finland in a bid to ensure safe air traffic movement.

The upgrade is expected to have an effect on the aircraft routes in the Helsinki area, especially in the Järvenpää, Tuusula and Kerava directions.

Valued at nearly €11m, the modernisation work will keep the runway closed for three months in summer this year.

As part of the project, the southern section of the Runway 15-33, beginning at the intersection of runways 1 and 2, will be redeveloped, which will help extend the usage of the renovated section by 14 years.

The project will also include the re-pavement of the runway, overhaul of its rainwater drainage and lighting, and replacement of the pavement at the southern section of the facility.

Finavia Helsinki Airport vice-president Heini Noronen-Juhola said: “We are currently looking into whether the entire airport lighting system could be replaced with LED technology.

"We are currently looking into whether the entire airport lighting system could be replaced with LED technology."

“At the very least, we are making that change possible now and overhauling the existing lights.”

The northern section of the runway is slated to be refurbished by 2019.

Under usual weather conditions, the renovation work at the runway is expected to have no effect on air traffic, which will run normally during the summer season.

The runway revamp is part of Finavia’s ongoing development programme, worth €900m at Helsinki Airport.

Focused on expanding the airport capacity, the development project is scheduled to be completed by 2020.
