Slated to be deployed at eleven airports in Germany and four airports in the Netherlands, the new technology will help replace the existing traditional systems over the next 13 years.

As part of the tender, the two Functional Airspace Block Europe Central (FABEC) partners will further procure three test and training systems jointly.

It will also later enable the standardisation of the technical systems of the two ANSPs.

"The joint procurement contributes to our long-lasting ambition for convergence on air traffic services (ATS) and communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) systems."

LVNL chief executive officer Michiel van Dorst said: “The common procurement provides clear benefits for both our organisations, for example in sharing expertise and reduction of cost.

DFS operates 49 ILS systems, of which 37 are equipped for CAT II / III all-weather operations, while LVNL operates ten ILSs, of which five can be used for CAT III operations.

On average, approximately three ILS systems have to be replaced each year as its typical technical life cycle is 17 to 20 years.

Covering an airspace of 1.7 million square kilometres, FABEC includes six states of France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, while it manages nearly 5.5 million flights each year.
