DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) and Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) have jointly purchased new instrument landing systems (ILS) from Thales Deutschland for installation at 15 airports.
DFS and LVNL are the air navigation service providers (ANSP) of Germany and the Netherlands, respectively.

Slated to be deployed at eleven airports in Germany and four airports in the Netherlands, the new technology will help replace the existing traditional systems over the next 13 years.
As part of the tender, the two Functional Airspace Block Europe Central (FABEC) partners will further procure three test and training systems jointly.
It will also later enable the standardisation of the technical systems of the two ANSPs.

DFS operates 49 ILS systems, of which 37 are equipped for CAT II / III all-weather operations, while LVNL operates ten ILSs, of which five can be used for CAT III operations.
On average, approximately three ILS systems have to be replaced each year as its typical technical life cycle is 17 to 20 years.
Covering an airspace of 1.7 million square kilometres, FABEC includes six states of France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, while it manages nearly 5.5 million flights each year.
