The Noida International Airport (NIA) currently being built in Jewar, India, has selected Siemens Logistics’ VarioTray baggage handling system (BHS).

Under the contract, Siemens Logistics will be responsible for designing, supplying, installing, commissioning and maintaining the BHS for the airport’s Terminal One.

The VarioTray conveyor technology is intended to support quick transportation of baggage, with its modular nature enabling scope for expansion in the future.

In addition, Siemens Logistics will deploy its BagIQ control software to provide intelligent baggage process control across the entire BHS.

The software uses advanced architecture to facilitate the routing of all bags and data coordination in the airport ecosystem.

Siemens Logistics executive vice-president Michael Schneider said: “We are very delighted that Noida International Airport has chosen us for this exciting new airport project in India.

“The deployment of our latest VarioTray and software technologies will significantly contribute to enhanced passenger experience at NIA – while the operator can rely on operational efficiency and future-proof expandability.”

The overall project will be carried out in four phases, initially focusing on the first terminal.

This terminal will be developed in two phases and have an initial annual passenger handling capacity of 12 million, which could subsequently be increased to 30 million.

Noida International Airport will aim to improve connectivity to and from the National Capital Region of Delhi, Noida and Western Uttar Pradesh.

The airport design will emphasise fast transfer processes for domestic-to-domestic passengers and domestic-to-international transfers.
