The funding will be provided to the Airport Authority through FAA grants over ten years.

This grant will help carry out various airfield upgrades such as newly redesigned taxiways and additional aircraft parking spots to lower aircraft taxiing times and greenhouse gas emissions.

The New T1 project will include the development of a modern facility for the replacement of the current Terminal 1.

This will help conclude the conversion of San Diego’s air transportation gateway.

Phase one of the New T1 project is anticipated to be completed in 2025, with the complete project scheduled to be concluded in late 2028.

Airport Authority president and CEO Kimberly Becker said: “The FAA’s investment helps SAN and our passengers by allowing for more efficient operations from the minute they arrive to the minute they depart.

“The Airport Authority team was able to demonstrate to the FAA that the airfield improvements project will provide significant enhancements and allow us to continue serving the region’s air service needs. We appreciate the support of the FAA.”

Last year in December, the Airport Authority broke ground on the $3.4bn New T1 project.
