Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI) in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has been opened after the completion of key upgrades.

The overhaul will allow the airport to meet the increased operational demand as well as compliance, accreditation, and safety.

Abu Dhabi Airports CEO Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi said: “In line with our strategic objectives, Abu Dhabi Airports (AD Airports) continues to invest in developing and maintaining our world-class infrastructure.

“The upgrades to Al Bateen Executive Airport will result in several tangible benefits such as increased airport capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, extending the lifetime of the runway and decreasing maintenance time and cost.”

Concluded in less than 90 days, the project included resurfacing and widening of the current 3.2km runway to house wide-body aircraft, ground lighting, enhanced signage and landscape.

Additionally, the airport’s airfield ground lighting was upgraded to help the airport operate Code 4D Aircraft.

More than 105,000t of asphalt was used on varying areas of the runway, shoulder areas of the runway and taxiways.

The revamp also involved the laying of 23km of cables and 15.5km of the duct, as well as the deployment of more than 400 new manholes.

General Civil Aviation Authority director general Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said: “The refurbishment project at Al Bateen Executive Airport embodies the commitment of our aviation partners in the UAE to invest in the safety, modernisation and sustainability of the region’s only dedicated executive airport.

“The engagement with Abu Dhabi Airports, from project inception until completion, has served to ensure the highest level of compliance with the national standards, regulations, guidance material and international best practices outlined by the GCAA.”
