Smiths Detection has started deploying its 30 HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX carry-on baggage screening systems at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO) in Rome, Italy.

The implementation of this screening technology is expected to improve the security and passenger experience at the airport.

The screening solutions provider said that its computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanner has been designed to generate high-resolution 3D images, enabling deeper and faster baggage assessment, as well as low false-alarm rates.

It is claimed to have the ability to detect electronics and liquids, therefore eliminating the need to remove them during the baggage screening process.

Coupled with the company’s IONSCAN 600 trace detectors, the CT X-ray scanners are said to further boost security and efficiency in operational efficiency.

The IONSCAN 600 has been designed to spot trace amounts of explosives and narcotics.

Additionally, the screening system at the airport can be equipped with the firm’s object recognition software called iCMORE, which automates the detection of prohibited items.

In April, Smiths Detection supplied its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX systems to Japan’s Tokyo International Airport (HND).

It also delivered iLane smart automatic tray return systems and UV-C tray disinfection systems to the airport.
