Aviation services company Swissport International has renewed its airport ground handling licence at Berlin Airport (BER) for another seven years.

BER airport operator Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg (FBB) renewed Swissport’s licence until 2029. The new licence will be effective from December.

Swissport International Germany and Austria head Philipp Frech said: “We are pleased to be able to serve our airline customers at Berlin Airport with professional ground services for another seven years. The licence extension is a credit to all our people.

“At Berlin Airport, we will continue to prioritise training and providing highly qualified staff. We’ll also invest in state-of-the-art equipment – most of which is electrically powered – to further improve the carbon footprint of our operation and contribute towards greener aviation.”

The services that Swissport will continue to provide at BER include aircraft loading and unloading, aircraft movement, and the transport of cargo and baggage.

Swissport first set up a presence in Berlin in 2015. It currently has a workforce of 650 at BER.

Of these 650 employees, at least 270 are allocated to passenger handling at check-in and gates, while around 350 work on the apron and in baggage handling.

In January, Swissport was selected by German budget airline Eurowings to provide passenger services at Cologne Bonn Airport.

The Swissport team will cater to Eurowings passengers at the ticket office, check-in and gate.

Additionally, the aviation services company agreed to offer lost and found services as well as coordinate aircraft turnarounds for the carrier
