Smiths Detection has delivered 12 sets of HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX carry-on baggage screening systems, iLane smart automatic tray return systems, and UV-C tray disinfection systems to Tokyo International Airport in Japan to enhance the check-in experience.
The new equipment will support Japan Airlines ‘Jal Smart Security’ at Tokyo International Airport Domestic Terminal security checkpoints, as well as help with more advanced security inspections.

Japan Airlines Airport Division executive officer Maeda Atsushi said: “At Tokyo International Airport, we have redesigned the system from check-in to the boarding gate, and have strengthened human services, embracing the digitalisation of our system.
“As part of this initiative, by introducing Smiths Detection’s security inspection system ‘Jal Smart Security’, it enables security checkpoint technology to further strengthen security inspections and shorten the inspection time, realising safer, more secure and stress-free airport services.”
Smiths said that its Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX is a computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanner that has been designed to capture volumetric 3D images for quicker baggage assessment and low false-alarm rates.
The CT scanner has the capability to detect electronics and liquids, therefore avoiding the need to remove them during the baggage screening process.

By GlobalDataSmiths Detection’s iLane is a fully automated tray return system, which offers higher throughput and streamlines the screening process.
The company’s UV-C product, which is an ultraviolet (UV) light tray disinfection kit, can be integrated into the iLane tray return system and is claimed to eliminate up to 99.9% of microorganisms, including the Covid-19 virus, to protect both passengers and airport staff.
The introduction of these technologies will begin this month and is expected to be completed by August.
Earlier this month, Smiths Detection was awarded a contract to deliver a suite of passenger baggage screening equipment at Terminal 1 of Incheon International Airport in South Korea.
