Air Navigation and Weather Services (ANWS), a division of the Taiwan Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), has selected Thales to upgrade the airport surveillance systems in the Taitung, Hualien and Songshan regions.
According to the agreement, Thales will replace the existing technology at these airports with new radar systems.

The selected airports are said to support Taiwan’s domestic air travel network while Songshan also facilitates international travel to China, Japan and Korea.
Thales will deploy its STAR NG primary surveillance radars, which will be co-mounted with its RSM NG secondary surveillance radars.
The company claims that its new surveillance system has been designed to deliver the ‘highest levels’ of detection and cybersecurity to fulfil ANWS’ surveillance requirements.
Under the contract, Thales will supply, install and provide factory and training to ANWS staff for maintaining the radars and associated equipment.

Once completed, the new technology will further enhance ANWS’s air traffic control (ATC) capacity with new capabilities and functions.

In December last year, Thales and Aeronav agreed to deliver new communication, navigation surveillance/air traffic management systems to Haiti’s civil aviation authority.
